Monkeypox: What to Know

BLOG Posts

What is it?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. It is part of the same family of viruses as variola virus, the virus that causes smallpox. Monkeypox is rarely fatal, with illness usually lasting 2-4 weeks. Symptoms can include: a rash, fever, headache, muscle aches and backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and exhaustion.

How does it spread?

Some of the ways Monkeypox spreads are through direct contact with monkeypox rash, scabs, or body fluids from a person with monkeypox, or by touching objects, fabrics (clothing, bedding, or towels), and surfaces that have been used by someone with monkeypox. Monkeypox can spread when symptoms first start all the way until the rash is fully healed.

What prevention steps I can take?

Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with people who have a rash that looks like monkeypox. Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. If you have a new or unexplained rash, or other monkeypox symptoms, you should visit a healthcare provider. Those who have monkeypox should isolate at home.

Which disinfectants are expected to be effective against this virus?

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Emerging Viral Pathogens (EVP) Claims apply to rare or novel viruses that cause outbreaks of disease. The EPA triggered its EVP guidance in response to Monkeypox. Easily refer to EPA’s List Q, where you can look up disinfectants for use on Tier 1 viruses (the Monkeypox virus falls into this category). The EPA expects products in this list to kill monkeypox when used according to the label directions.
